The whole neighborhood rises together when small businesses stand together.

Across Irving, Judah, Lawton, Noriega, and Taraval, the Sunset’s commercial corridors are more than just places of business — they’re where community happens. Every coffee poured, every happy customer, and every open sign hung is part of the rhythm that makes this district one of San Francisco’s most authentic and hard-working neighborhoods.

Who We Are

The Sunset Merchants Association (SMA) was built to empower local businesses, connect corridors, and ensure the voices of merchants and residents guide the district’s future.

**

We are not waiting for recognition — we are building it.
We are not asking for permission — we are taking initiative.
We are not a committee — we are a coalition.

**

Together, we are shaping a stronger, more connected, and more resilient Sunset —
built by merchants, embraced by residents, and powered by community.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Sunset Merchants Association?

The Sunset Merchants Association (SMA) is an independent nonprofit formed by local business owners to support the economic and cultural vitality of San Francisco’s Sunset District. We focus on strengthening small businesses, encouraging collaboration, and celebrating the diversity that defines our neighborhood.

Why was SMA created?

The Sunset District is home to hundreds of businesses across two major zip codes, yet many merchants have felt disconnected from shared advocacy, resources, or community-wide coordination. SMA was created to help fill that gap by bringing business owners together around shared values, transparency, and practical, results-driven support. Our goal is to complement existing efforts and build stronger connections across the district.

How is SMA different from other merchant groups?

SMA is led by active business owners who understand the realities of running a business in San Francisco.
We are: (a) Values-based, with an emphasis on transparency, accountability, and collaboration, (b) Focused on tangible outcomes such as visibility, foot traffic, and shared events, and (c) Inclusive of both legacy businesses and emerging entrepreneurs.

We prioritize coordination and shared impact over competition.

What are SMA’s current priorities?

Our initial focus includes: (a) Building an inclusive membership that reflects the diversity of Sunset businesses, (b) Creating clear communication channels between merchants, residents, and city partners, (c) Planning a public community meeting in early 2026, and (d) Developing partnerships that support economic opportunity and attract visitors to the district.

Will SMA collaborate with other organizations?

Yes. SMA actively seeks collaboration with other merchant associations, community groups, and civic organizations that share our mission.

By aligning efforts and sharing resources, we can amplify impact and better support businesses throughout the Sunset.

How does SMA benefit the Sunset Community?

Strong local businesses contribute to vibrant neighborhoods. Supporting merchants helps create local jobs, activate commercial corridors, and foster community pride.

SMA’s work highlights the people, cultures, and creativity that make the Sunset a unique and welcoming place.
